信言不美,
Xìnyán bù měi,
True words are not beautiful,
美言不信。
Měiyán bù xìn.
And beautiful words are not true.
善者不辩,
Shànzhě bù biàn,
Good people do not argue,
辩者不善。
Biànzhě bù shàn.
And those who argue are not good.
知者不博,
Zhīzhě bù bó,
The wise do not need vast knowledge,
博者不知。
Bózhě bù zhī.
And those with vast knowledge may lack wisdom.
圣人不积,
Shèngrén bù jī,
A sage does not hoard,
既以为人己愈有,
Jì yǐ wéi rén jǐ yù yǒu,
The more he does for others, the more he gains,
既以与人己愈多。
Jì yǐ yǔ rén jǐ yù duō.
The more he gives, the wealthier he becomes.
天之道,
Tiān zhī dào,
The Dao of heaven benefits without harming;
利而不害;
Lì ér bù hài;
The Dao of the sage acts without contention.
