和大怨,
Hé dà yuàn,
After settling great conflicts,
必有馀怨;
Bì yǒu yú yuàn;
Resentments inevitably remain;
报怨以德,
Bào yuàn yǐ dé,
To resolve resentment with virtue,
安可以为善?
Ān kěyǐ wéi shàn?
How can this be called good?
是以圣人执左契,
Shì yǐ shèngrén zhí zuǒ qì,
Thus, the sage keeps their part of the agreement,
而不责于人。
Ér bù zé yú rén.
Without demanding from others.
有德司契,
Yǒu dé sī qì,
Those with virtue fulfill their duties,
无德司彻。
Wú dé sī chè.
Those without virtue demand fulfillment.
天道无亲,
Tiān dào wú qīn,
The Dao of heaven shows no favoritism,
常与善人。
Cháng yǔ shàn rén.
It always aligns with the virtuous.
