和大怨，
|
After settling great conflicts, |
|
必有馀怨；
|
Resentments inevitably remain; |
|
报怨以德，
|
To resolve resentment with virtue, |
|
安可以为善？
|
How can this be called good? |
|
是以圣人执左契，
|
Thus, the sage keeps their part of the agreement, |
|
而不责于人。
|
Without demanding from others. |
|
有德司契，
|
Those with virtue fulfill their duties, |
|
无德司彻。
|
Those without virtue demand fulfillment. |
|
天道无亲，
|
The Dao of heaven shows no favoritism, |
|
常与善人。
|
It always aligns with the virtuous. |
