民不畏死,
Mín bù wèi sǐ,
If people do not fear death,
奈何以死惧之?
Nài hé yǐ sǐ jù zhī?
How can you use death to frighten them?
若使民常畏死,
Ruò shǐ mín cháng wèi sǐ,
If people always fear dying,
而为奇者,
Ér wéi qí zhě,
And someone dares to break the law,
吾得执而杀之,
Wú dé zhí ér shā zhī,
Who can seize and kill them?
孰敢?
Shú gǎn?
Who would dare?
常有司杀者杀。
Cháng yǒu sī shā zhě shā.
There is always an official executioner.
夫代司杀者杀,
Fū dài sī shā zhě shā,
If you take the executioner's place,
是谓代大匠斲者,
Shì wèi dài dà jiàng zhuó zhě,
It is like replacing the master carpenter,
希有不伤其手矣。
Xī yǒu bù shāng qí shǒu yǐ.
You will rarely avoid hurting your hand.
