It is easy to maintain what is calm. |
It is easy to plan for what has not yet appeared. |
The brittle is easy to break. |
The small is easy to scatter. |
Handle things before they exist. |
Manage affairs before there is disorder. |
A tree that fills your arms |
生于毫末;
Grows from a tiny sprout. |
A nine-story terrace |
起于累土;
Starts from a mound of earth. |
A journey of a thousand miles |
Begins beneath your feet. |
If you act hastily, you fail. |
If you try to grasp, you lose. |
Thus, the sage does not force actions |
And therefore does not fail. |
无执,
He does not cling, |
And thus does not lose. |
People often fail when they are on the brink of success. |
常于几成而败之;
Give the same care to the end as to the beginning, |
Then you will not fail. |
Therefore the sage desires non-desire, |
He does not value hard-to-get treasures. |
不贵难得之货;
He learns to unlearn, |
And he rectifies the mistakes of others. |
He helps all things follow their nature |
Without presuming to act. |
