为无为,
Wèi wú wéi,
Act without striving,
事无事,
shì wú shì,
work without effort,
味无味。
wèi wú wèi.
and savor the bland.
大小多少,
Dà xiǎo duō shǎo,
Regard the small as significant,
报怨以德。
bào yuàn yǐ dé.
and repay harm with virtue.
图难于其易,
Tú nán yú qí yì,
Tackle the difficult while it is easy;
为大于其细。
wèi dà yú qí xì.
accomplish the great through the small.
天下难事,
Tiānxià nán shì,
The toughest tasks in the world
必作于易,
bì zuò yú yì,
start easy;
天下大事,
tiānxià dà shì,
the grandest achievements
必作于细。
bì zuò yú xì.
begin small.
是以圣人终不为大,
Shì yǐ shèngrén zhōng bù wéi dà,
The sage avoids grand ambitions,
故能成其大。
gù néng chéng qí dà.
and thus accomplishes greatness.
夫轻诺必寡信,
Fū qīng nuò bì guǎ xìn,
Easy promises lead to little trust;
多易必多难。
duō yì bì duō nán.
taking things lightly leads to great trouble.
是以圣人犹难之,
Shì yǐ shèngrén yóu nán zhī,
Therefore, the sage treats things seriously,
故终无难矣。
gù zhōng wú nán yǐ.
and meets no difficulties.
