Dào zhě wànwù zhī ào.
Dao is the essence of all things.
Shàn rén zhī bǎo,
It is the treasure of the good,
bù shàn rén zhī suǒ bǎo.
and the refuge for the not good.
Měi yán kěyǐ shì zūn,
Fine words can buy honor,
měi xíng kěyǐ jiā rén.
good deeds can win respect.
Rén zhī bù shàn,
As for the not good,
hé qì zhī yǒu?
why should they be abandoned?
Gù lì tiānzǐ,
Thus, on the day an emperor is crowned,
zhì sān gōng,
or the three ministers are installed,
suī yǒu gǒng bì yǐ xiān sì mǎ,
do not offer jade or a team of horses,
bùrú zuò jìn cǐ dào.
but remain still and offer the Dao.
Gǔ zhī suǒyǐ guì cǐ dào zhě hé?
Why did the ancients treasure the Dao?
Bù yuē qiú yǐ dé,
Because in seeking, you find,
yǒu zuì yǐ miǎn yé?
and in making mistakes, you are forgiven.
Gù wèi tiānxià guì.
That is why it is honored under heaven.
