Dà guó zhě xià liú,
A great nation flows downward like water,
Tiān xià zhī jiāo yě,
It connects with the world,
Tiān xià zhī pìn.
It is the mother of all under heaven.
Pìn cháng yǐ jìng shèng mǔ,
The feminine conquers the masculine by stillness,
Yǐ jìng wéi xià.
Embracing stillness, it lowers itself.
Gù dà guó yǐ xià xiǎo guó,
Therefore, a great nation by placing itself below a smaller one,
则取小国;
Zé qǔ xiǎo guó;
Gains the smaller nation.
Xiǎo guó yǐ xià dà guó,
A smaller nation by placing itself below a great one,
Zé qǔ dà guó.
Gains the great nation.
Gù huò xià yǐ qǔ,
Thus, one who yields takes,
Huò xià ér qǔ.
And one who lowers themselves gains.
Dà guó bùguò yù jiān chù rén,
A great nation desires to embrace and nourish people,
Xiǎo guó bùguò yù rù shì rén.
A small nation desires to serve its people.
Fū liǎng zhě gè dé suǒ yù,
When both attain their desires,
Dà zhě yí wéi xià.
It is fitting for the greater to yield.
