A great nation flows downward like water, |
It connects with the world, |
It is the mother of all under heaven. |
The feminine conquers the masculine by stillness, |
Embracing stillness, it lowers itself. |
Therefore, a great nation by placing itself below a smaller one, |
则取小国;
Gains the smaller nation. |
A smaller nation by placing itself below a great one, |
Gains the great nation. |
Thus, one who yields takes, |
And one who lowers themselves gains. |
A great nation desires to embrace and nourish people, |
A small nation desires to serve its people. |
When both attain their desires, |
It is fitting for the greater to yield. |
