其政闷闷,
Qí zhèng mèn mèn,
When the government is simple,
其民淳淳;
Qí mín chún chún;
The people are sincere;
其政察察,
Qí zhèng chá chá,
When the government is severe,
其民缺缺。
Qí mín quē quē.
The people are devious.
祸兮,
Huò xī,
Misfortune lies in fortune,
福之所倚,
Fú zhī suǒ yǐ,
Fortune hides in misfortune.
福兮,
Fú xī,
Who can see the end?
祸之所伏。
Huò zhī suǒ fú.
There is no absolute.
孰知其极?
Shú zhī qí jí?
What is right can become strange,
其无正也。
Qí wú zhèng yě.
What is good can turn evil.
正复为奇,
Zhèng fù wéi qí,
Humanity has been confused,
善复为妖。
Shàn fù wéi yāo.
For a very long time.
人之迷,
Rén zhī mí,
Therefore the sage is sharp but does not harm,
其日固久。
Qí rì gù jiǔ.
Direct but gentle,
是以圣人方而不割,
Shì yǐ shèngrén fāng ér bù gē,
Honest but modest,
廉而不刿,
Lián ér bù guì,
Radiant but not dazzling.
