使我介然有知,
Shǐ wǒ jièrán yǒu zhī,
If I have even a humble wisdom,
行于大道,
Xíng yú dàdào,
I will walk on the broad road of Dao,
唯施是畏。
Wéi shī shì wèi.
Only fearing straying from it.
大道甚夷,
Dàdào shèn yí,
The Dao is wide and plain,
而人好径。
Ér rén hào jìng.
Yet people prefer shortcuts.
朝甚除,
Cháo shèn chú,
The court is adorned with luxury,
田甚芜,
Tián shèn wú,
While the fields are overgrown,
仓甚虚;
Cāng shèn xū;
And the granaries are empty.
服文采,
Fú wéncǎi,
Some wear splendid clothes,
带利剑,
Dài lìjiàn,
Carry sharp swords,
厌饮食,
Yàn yǐnshí,
Indulge in food and drink,
财货有馀;
Cáihuò yǒu yú;
Amass wealth and treasures;
是为盗夸。
Shì wéi dào kuā.
They are shameless thieves.
非道也哉!
Fēi dào yě zāi!
This is not in accordance with Dao!
