道生之,
Dào shēng zhī,
Dao gives birth to all things,
德畜之,
Dé xù zhī,
Virtue fosters them,
物形之,
Wù xíng zhī,
Matter forms them,
势成之。
Shì chéng zhī.
Circumstances shape them.
是以万物莫不尊道而贵德。
Shì yǐ wànwù mò bù zūn dào ér guì dé.
Therefore, all beings respect Dao and honor Virtue.
道之尊,
Dào zhī zūn,
This respect and honor
德之贵,
Dé zhī guì,
Are not enforced but natural.
夫莫之命而常自然。
Fū mò zhī mìng ér cháng zìrán.
Thus, Dao gives life,
故道生之,
Gù dào shēng zhī,
And Virtue nurtures;
德畜之;
Dé xù zhī;
They grow and are cultivated;
长之育之;
Zhǎng zhī yù zhī;
They fulfill and mature;
成之熟之;
Chéng zhī shú zhī;
They are cared for and protected.
养之覆之。
Yǎng zhī fù zhī.
Creating without owning,
生而不有,
Shēng ér bù yǒu,
Acting without dependence,
为而不恃,
Wéi ér bù shì,
Leading without ruling.
长而不宰。
Zhǎng ér bù zǎi.
This is called the profound Virtue.
