出生入死。
Chūshēng rùsǐ.
To be born is to move towards death.
生之徒十有三;
Shēng zhī tú shí yǒu sān;
Among the living, three in ten embrace life;
死之徒十有三。
Sǐ zhī tú shí yǒu sān.
Three in ten follow death.
人之生,
Rén zhī shēng,
And those just living,
动之于死地,
Dòng zhī yú sǐdì,
Also move towards death,
亦十有三。
Yì shí yǒu sān.
Making up another three in ten.
夫何故?
Fū hégù?
Why is this so?
以其生生之厚。
Yǐ qí shēngshēng zhī hòu.
Because they grasp life too firmly.
盖闻善摄生者,
Gài wén shàn shè shēng zhě,
It is said the one skilled in living,
路行不遇兕虎,
Lù xíng bù yù sì hǔ,
Travels without fear of beasts,
入军不被甲兵。
Rù jūn bú bèi jiǎ bīng.
Enters battle without harm.
兕无所投其角,
Sì wú suǒ tóu qí jiǎo,
The beast finds no place to strike,
虎无所措其爪,
Hǔ wú suǒ cuò qí zhuǎ,
The tiger no place to claw,
兵无所容其刃。
Bīng wú suǒ róng qí rèn.
Weapons no place to pierce.
夫何故?
Fū hégù?
Why is this?
以其无死地。
Yǐ qí wú sǐdì.
Because they leave no place for death to enter.
