出生入死。

To be born is to move towards death. |
生之徒十有三;

Among the living, three in ten embrace life; |
死之徒十有三。

Three in ten follow death. |
人之生,
|
And those just living, |
动之于死地,
|
Also move towards death, |
亦十有三。

Making up another three in ten. |
夫何故?
|
Why is this so? |
以其生生之厚。
|
Because they grasp life too firmly. |
盖闻善摄生者,
|
It is said the one skilled in living, |
路行不遇兕虎,
|
Travels without fear of beasts, |
入军不被甲兵。
|
Enters battle without harm. |
兕无所投其角,
|
The beast finds no place to strike, |
虎无所措其爪,
|
The tiger no place to claw, |
兵无所容其刃。
|
Weapons no place to pierce. |
夫何故?
|
Why is this? |
以其无死地。
|
Because they leave no place for death to enter. |
