天地不仁,
Tiān dì bù rén,
Heaven and earth do not show mercy,
以万物为刍狗;
yǐ wàn wù wéi chú gǒu;
They treat all things as straw dogs.
圣人不仁,
Shèngrén bù rén,
Wise beings do not show mercy,
以百姓为刍狗。
yǐ bǎi xìng wéi chú gǒu.
They see people as straw dogs.
天地之间,
Tiān dì zhī jiān,
The space between heaven and earth,
其犹橐蘥乎?
qí yóu tuó yuè hū?
Is it not like a bellows?
虚而不屈,
Xū ér bù qū,
Empty yet never exhausted,
动而愈出。
dòng ér yù chū.
The more it moves, the more it produces.
多言数穷,
Duō yán shù qióng,
Excessive words lead to exhaustion,
不如守中。
bùrú shǒu zhōng.
Better to hold on to the center.
