天下有道,

When the Dao is present in the world, |
却走马以粪。
|
Horses work the fields and haul manure. |
天下无道,
|
When the Dao is absent in the world, |
戎马生于郊。
|
Warhorses are bred outside the cities. |
祸莫大于不知足;
|
There is no greater calamity than discontent; |
咎莫大于欲得。
|
No greater fault than relentless desire. |
故知足之足,
|
Therefore, knowing sufficiency is true riches, |
常足矣。
|
And one who knows contentment will always have enough. |
