天下有道,
Tiānxià yǒu dào,
When the Dao is present in the world,
却走马以粪。
Què zǒu mǎ yǐ fèn.
Horses work the fields and haul manure.
天下无道,
Tiānxià wú dào,
When the Dao is absent in the world,
戎马生于郊。
Róng mǎ shēng yú jiāo.
Warhorses are bred outside the cities.
祸莫大于不知足;
Huò mò dà yú bù zhī zú;
There is no greater calamity than discontent;
咎莫大于欲得。
Jiù mò dà yú yù dé.
No greater fault than relentless desire.
故知足之足,
Gù zhī zú zhī zú,
Therefore, knowing sufficiency is true riches,
常足矣。
Cháng zú yǐ.
And one who knows contentment will always have enough.
