名与身孰亲?
Míng yǔ shēn shú qīn?
Fame or self: which is closer?
身与货孰多?
Shēn yǔ huò shú duō?
Self or wealth: which is more abundant?
得与亡孰病?
Dé yǔ wáng shú bìng?
Gain or loss: which brings more trouble?
是故甚爱必大费;
Shì gù shèn ài bì dà fèi;
Excessive desire incurs great expense;
多藏必厚亡。
Duō cáng bì hòu wáng.
Hoarding leads to heavy loss.
故知足不辱,
Gù zhīzú bù rǔ,
Therefore, contentment avoids disgrace,
知止不殆,
Zhī zhǐ bù dài,
Knowing when to stop avoids peril,
可以长久。
Kěyǐ chángjiǔ.
Thus ensuring long-lasting safety.
