上士闻道,
Shàng shì wén dào,
The wise hear of the Dao,
勤而行之;
qín ér xíng zhī;
and practice it diligently.
中士闻道,
Zhōng shì wén dào,
The average hear of the Dao,
若存若亡;
ruò cún ruò wáng;
and think of it occasionally.
下士闻道,
Xià shì wén dào,
The foolish hear of the Dao,
大笑之。
dà xiào zhī.
and laugh at it loudly.
不笑不足以为道。
Bù xiào bùzú yǐ wéi dào.
If there were no laughter, the Dao would not be true.
故建言有之:
Gù jiàn yán yǒu zhī:
Thus it is said:
明道若昧;
Míng dào ruò mèi;
The bright path appears dim;
进道若退;
Jìn dào ruò tuì;
The path forward seems like retreat;
夷道若纇;
Yí dào ruò léi;
The easy way appears hard,
上德若谷;
Shàng dé ruò gǔ;
True virtue seems empty;
大白若辱;
Dà bái ruò rǔ;
Pure whiteness appears sullied;
广德若不足;
Guǎng dé ruò bùzú;
Abundant virtue seems inadequate;
建德若偷;
Jiàn dé ruò tōu;
Firm virtue seems frail;
质真若渝;
Zhí zhēn ruò yú;
Genuine purity appears tarnished;
大方无隅;
Dà fāng wú yú;
The great square has no corners;
大器晚成;
Dà qì wǎn chéng;
Great vessels take time to complete;
大音希声;
Dà yīn xī shēng;
Great sounds are rarely heard;
大象无形;
Dà xiàng wú xíng;
The great figure has no shape;
道隐无名。
Dào yǐn wú míng.
The Dao is hidden and nameless.
夫唯道,
Fū wéi dào,
Yet the Dao alone
善贷且成。
shàn dài qiě chéng.
nourishes and fulfills all things.
