道冲,
Dào chōng,
Dao is empty,
而用之或不盈。
ér yòng zhī huò bù yíng.
Yet it is ever utilized and never depleted.
渊兮,
Yuān xī,
Deep and profound,
似万物之宗;
sì wànwù zhī zōng;
It is the source of all things.
挫其锐,
cuò qí ruì,
It blunts sharpness,
解其纷,
jiě qí fēn,
Untangles the complex,
和其光,
hé qí guāng,
Softens the light,
同其尘;
tóng qí chén;
Merges with the dust.
湛兮似或存。
zhàn xī sì huò cún.
Elusive yet always present.
吾不知谁之子?
Wú bù zhī shéi zhī zi?
I do not know whose child it is,
象帝之先。
Xiàng dì zhī xiān.
But it predates the highest deities.
