True power does not grasp for power; |
是以有德;
Thus, it holds genuine power. |
Lesser power does not lose power; |
Thus, it lacks true power. |
上德无为而无以为;
True power acts without effort; |
Lesser power acts with intentions. |
上仁为之而无以为;
True goodness acts without motives; |
True righteousness acts with motives. |
When rituals are performed and ignored, |
The enforcer uses force. |
Therefore, losing Dao brings power, |
Losing power brings goodness, |
Losing goodness brings righteousness, |
Losing righteousness brings rituals. |
Rituals are the thin crust of loyalty, |
And the start of disorder. |
Foreknowledge is the flower of the Dao, |
And the beginning of folly. |
Therefore, the wise person dwells in the substance, |
Does not reside in the superficial; |
Lives in the reality, |
不居其薄;
Does not dwell in illusions. |
Thus, they embrace the essential, |
And let go of the trivial. |
