大道氾兮,
Dàdào fàn xī,
The great Dao flows everywhere,
其可左右。
Qí kě zuǒyòu.
To the left and to the right.
万物恃之以生而不辞,
Wànwù shì zhī yǐ shēng ér bù cí,
All things rely on it for life, yet it does not refuse them.
功成不名有,
Gōng chéng bù míng yǒu,
It completes its tasks without claiming ownership.
衣养万物而不为主。
Yī yǎng wànwù ér bù wéi zhǔ.
It nourishes all beings without becoming their master.
常无欲,
Cháng wú yù,
Always free of desire,
可名于小;
Kě míng yú xiǎo;
It can be considered small;
万物归焉而不为主,
Wànwù guī yān ér bù wéi zhǔ,
All things return to it, yet it does not become their master,
可名为大。
Kě míng wéi dà.
It can be considered great.
以其终不自为大,
Yǐ qí zhōng bù zì wéi dà,
Because it never seeks greatness,
故能成其大。
Gù néng chéng qí dà.
It achieves true greatness.
