大道氾兮,

The great Dao flows everywhere, |
其可左右。
|
To the left and to the right. |
万物恃之以生而不辞,
|
All things rely on it for life, yet it does not refuse them. |
功成不名有,
|
It completes its tasks without claiming ownership. |
衣养万物而不为主。
|
It nourishes all beings without becoming their master. |
常无欲,
|
Always free of desire, |
可名于小;
|
It can be considered small; |
万物归焉而不为主,
|
All things return to it, yet it does not become their master, |
可名为大。
|
It can be considered great. |
以其终不自为大,
|
Because it never seeks greatness, |
故能成其大。
|
It achieves true greatness. |
