夫佳兵者,
Fū jiā bīng zhě,
The finest weapons
不祥之器,
Bùxiáng zhī qì,
Are tools of misfortune,
物或恶之,
Wù huò è zhī,
Despised by all beings.
故有道者不处。
Gù yǒu dào zhě bù chǔ.
Thus, those who follow Dao avoid them.
君子居则贵左,
Jūn zǐ jū zé guì zuǒ,
In peaceful times, the noble favor the left,
用兵则贵右。
Yòng bīng zé guì yòu.
In war, they favor the right.
兵者不祥之器,
Bīng zhě bùxiáng zhī qì,
Weapons are tools of misfortune,
非君子之器,
Fēi jūn zǐ zhī qì,
Not tools for the noble.
不得已而用之,
Bùdéyǐ ér yòng zhī,
Only when absolutely necessary, they are used,
恬淡为上。
Tiándàn wèi shàng.
And peace is prized above all.
胜而不美,
Shèng ér bùměi,
Victory brings no glory,
而美之者,
Ér měi zhī zhě,
To glorify it,
是乐杀人。
Shì lè shārén.
Is to delight in killing.
夫乐杀人者,
Fū lè shārén zhě,
Those who delight in killing
则不可得志于天下矣。
Zé bùkě dézhì yú tiānxià yǐ.
Cannot achieve their purpose in the world.
吉事尚左,
Jí shì shàng zuǒ,
In auspicious times, the left is honored,
凶事尚右。
Xiōng shì shàng yòu.
In ominous times, the right is favored.
偏将军居左,
Piān jiāngjūn jū zuǒ,
The lieutenant stands on the left,
上将军居右,
Shàng jiāngjūn jū yòu,
The general on the right,
言以丧礼处之。
Yán yǐ sānglǐ chǔ zhī.
Conducting war as a funeral.
杀人之众,
Shārén zhī zhòng,
When many are killed,
以悲哀泣之,
Yǐ bēiāi qì zhī,
They are mourned with sorrow and tears,
战胜以丧礼处之。
Zhànshèng yǐ sānglǐ chǔ zhī.
Victory in war is observed as a funeral.
