企者不立;
Qǐ zhě bù lì;
He who stands on tiptoe does not stand firm.
跨者不行;
Kuà zhě bù xíng;
He who hurries ahead does not proceed far.
自见者不明;
Zì jiàn zhě bù míng;
He who seeks attention is not enlightened.
自是者不彰;
Zì shì zhě bù zhāng;
He who is self-righteous is not respected.
自伐者无功;
Zì fá zhě wú gōng;
He who boasts achieves nothing.
自矜者不长。
Zì jīn zhě bù cháng.
He who brags will not endure.
其在道也,曰:
Qí zài dào yě, yuē:
In the realm of Dao, it is said:
馀食赘形。
Yú shí zhuì xíng.
These are excesses and hindrances.
物或恶之,
Wù huò wù zhī,
They are despised by all.
故有道者不处。
Gù yǒu dào zhě bù chù.
Therefore, one who follows Dao avoids them.
