希言自然。
Xī yán zìrán.
Speak sparingly; it is natural.
故飘风不终朝,
Gù piāofēng bù zhōng zhāo,
Whirlwinds do not last the whole morning,
骤雨不终日。
Zhòuyǔ bù zhōng rì.
Nor do heavy rains last the entire day.
孰为此者?
Shú wéi cǐ zhě?
Who causes these?
天地。
Tiāndì.
Heaven and Earth.
天地尚不能久,
Tiāndì shàng bùnéng jiǔ,
Even Heaven and Earth cannot sustain them long;
而况于人乎?
Ér kuàng yú rén hū?
How much less can humans?
故从事于道者,
Gù cóngshì yú dào zhě,
Those aligned with the Dao
同于道;
Tóng yú dào;
Are one with the Dao;
德者,
Dé zhě,
Those aligned with virtue
同于德;
Tóng yú dé;
Are one with virtue;
失者,
Shī zhě,
Those aligned with loss
同于失。
Tóng yú shī.
Are one with loss.
同于道者,
Tóng yú dào zhě,
To be one with the Dao,
道亦乐得之;
Dào yì lè dé zhī;
The Dao welcomes you;
同于德者,
Tóng yú dé zhě,
To be one with virtue,
德亦乐得之;
Dé yì lè dé zhī;
Virtue embraces you;
于失者,
Yú shī zhě,
To be one with loss,
失亦乐得之。
Shī yì lè dé zhī.
Loss accepts you.
信不足焉,
Xìn bù zú yān,
Lack of trust
有不信焉。
Yǒu bù xìn yān.
Begets distrust.
