The people gain manifold benefits. |

绝仁弃义，
|
Renounce morality, reject justice, |
|
民复孝慈；
|
The people find true compassion. |

绝巧弃利，
|
Forsake ingenuity, forgo profit, |
|
盗贼无有。
|
Thieves and robbers disappear. |
|
此三者，
|
These three are mere appearances. |
|
以为文不足。
|
They are not enough by themselves. |
|
故令有所属：
|
Instead, stay connected: |
|
见素抱朴，
|
Embrace the plain and simple, |
|
少私寡欲。
|
Desire little, need less. |
