Chǒng rǔ ruò jīng,
Favor and disgrace can both startle.
Guì dà huàn ruò shēn.
High status burdens the body.
Hé wèi chǒng rǔ ruò jīng?
Why do favor and disgrace startle?
Chǒng wéi xià,
Favor is inferior.
Dé zhī ruò jīng,
Win it, and it startles.
Shī zhī ruò jīng,
Lose it, and it startles.
Shì wèi chǒng rǔ ruò jīng.
That is why favor and disgrace startle.
Hé wèi guì dà huàn ruò shēn?
Why does high status burden the body?
Wú suǒyǐ yǒu dà huàn zhě,
I worry because I have a body.
Wèi wú yǒu shēn,
Without a body, what could I worry about?
Jí wú wú shēn,
Therefore, consider the body as the world.
Wú yǒu hé huàn?
Then you are fit to govern the world.
Gù guì yǐ shēn wéi tiānxià,
Love the world as your body.
若可寄天下;
Ruò kě jì tiānxià;
Then you are worthy to be entrusted with the world.
